Stay Active As you Age

Guest post by Gabriel Patel

As an empty nester, a retiree or someone who has downsized to smaller living quarters, having an abundance of time can leave you at a loss with what to do with it. Don't waste it; take control of these newfound hours to promote physical and mental health while having fun and improving your life. Here are some tips from Koslo’s Nutrition Solutions to get you started.

Dedicate Time for Exercise and Eating Healthy

Muscle is important to bone strength and balance. Unfortunately, as you age, muscle mass decreases. A lack of muscle strength can compromise your mobility, so remaining physically active is imperative. Have you always wanted to hike, take up yoga, join a STEPS Fitness class or start a walking group? Now is when to get out and do it. Researchers have found that seniors had 35% less occurrence of dementia when walking three to four times a week than those who had no routine physical exercise.

Keep track of your fitness statistics so you can set goals, see your progress, and remain motivated. If you invest in a smartwatch, do some research to find a type of wristband that works best for the activity you are participating in.

Eating and drinking healthier also lead to fitness. Consuming more fruits and vegetables aids in mental functionality and energy. As people age, the sensation of being thirsty decreases. Therefore, it is important to manage water intake to remain hydrated. Hydration promotes better brain function, digestive health, kidney function, urinary health, and metabolism.

Additionally, you can do yourself a big favor by getting some natural sunlight, which is rich in Vitamin D. Just 10-30 minutes of midday sunlight most days of the week should cover your needs for this important vitamin.

Take Up Hobbies and Volunteering

If your hobbies have been pushed aside over the years due to not having enough hours in the day, pull them back out. Whether it is painting, knitting, cooking, woodworking, or golfing, doing something you enjoy reduces stress and creates rewarding social opportunities.

If you have previously passed on your thoughts of dedicating yourself to sick babies, the elderly, or animals, take this opportunity to reach out to local organizations that need volunteers. You will not only benefit society, but research shows volunteers spend 38% fewer nights in the hospital.

Fulfill Your Days With Your Own Business

Take your passions, talents, and experience and start your own company. Whether you want a full-time or part-time gig, research steps on how to get started and the best business formation. A limited liability company has tax advantages and flexibility along with protecting your personal assets. You can use a formation service or file yourself to avoid attorney fees, but make sure you know the rules of formation before you finalize the setup.

Stretch Yourself and Learn Something New

Extracurricular activities may not have been possible with your hectic life before, but now you can take those dance or guitar lessons, learn a new language or enroll in online classes. Keep your brain active and creative to prevent going into a rut. Blazing new trails builds confidence as you push yourself and conquer the fear of trying something new.

As a senior with newfound freedom and time, it can seem challenging to figure out what to do all day. Think back to the years you were busy with family and career responsibilities and remember what you wanted to do if you had had the time. Take control of your physical and mental health with a positive approach to this new phase in life and fill your days with activities that bring you happiness and well-being.
